I have inherited a bone-handle carving set with the following stamp on the knife blade: “J. Russell & Co. Green River Works”. The set consists of knife, fork with 3-legged stand, & sharpening steel. Inside the diamond shape of the stamp are the numbers 1834. Each tool is set with a sterling silver connecting band between the bone & the implement.
Can you tell me anything about this carving set?
Going through the Web site, I couldn’t find any pictures of cutlery produced by the company over the years, so I have no idea how old this maybe. Your help would be most appreciated!
I will forward this to our Curator for review.
The 1834 is a Trade Mark. Your set was made in the late 1800’s to Early 1900’s
