The painstaking art work and skills required to manufacture various design figures, letters and numbers used on metal products was done locally. Presumably this industry was an outgrowth of the need from very early times to identify metal products and also indicate company and location of manufacture. This is still an important industry and one company, Valley Steel Stamp, continues to operate in Greenfield in 2022. Until modern manufacturing methods arrived sometime in the 20th century these were truly hand crafted with skills comparable to engraving. The museum archives include samples of art work and methods.
Below is some history on these companies.
