Tap and Die

Evolution of the Tap & Die Industry in Franklin County

The evolution of the local Tap and Die industry is very complex and interrelated, but it all began over 150 years ago with the John Grant Patent for the first 'Die" for cutting screw threads.

We have created a graphic that is our best approximation of the evolution of many of these companies. A large version of this graphic can be viewed HERE.

A comprehensive listing of tap manufacturers between 1867 and 1940 as compiled by a Mr. John E. Winter can be viewed HERE

We also have a fascinating history of the Greenfield Tool Industry written by Herb Darling in 1965. Mr. Darling had the good fortune of knowing many of the early industrial figures in Greenfield. It can be viewed HERE

These are the companies that are represented in the museum.
