(Adapted from “Picturesque Franklin” , Wade, Warner & Co. , Northampton MA 1891
This publication was a “snap shot” of Franklin County businesses and industries as of 1891. This original article will not include the history which occurred afterwards, unless noted by the museum editor.)
The A. F. Towle & Son Co. was founded at Newburyport, Mass., in 1855 and incorporated in 1882. In 1890 they completed large works especially adapted to their business, at Greenfield, to which they removed in the same year.
They manufacture the finest grade of electro plated and sterling silver ware and have a well established trade, sending their product to every part of the country, but selling to the jewelry trade only. The employees number 125, to which they are constantly adding to keep pace with their steadily increasing business.
The capital stock is $100,000, and the officers are: President, R. N. Oakman, Jr.; vice-pres., A. F. Towle; treas., E. B. Towle; superintendent, E. D. Severance.
** Editor’s Note**
It was the R.N. Oakman Jr., which founded the short lived Oakman Motor Carriage Company at this site location, in 1899.
